Blog Social Networking

Social networking is a transformational technology that influences the lives of billions of people. Social networking has made people more connected with one another due to the ease of communication available through the internet and other technologies. “It is clear that individuals are increasingly using these sites to keep in touch with friends, find jobs and enhance their careers. Social networking sites drew 139.8 million visitors in April, a 12% increase from 124.4 million in March, according to comScore, a service that measures web traffic.”[1] These technologies have made networking very simple by allowing people to contact across the world with a simple message or post. There are many downsides that have occurred as well. Privacy is much more difficult to attain even for the most affluent and powerful people in the world. The biggest concern is how communication changed due to social media. Social media made people lack the development of real-life social skills and ironically made people antisocial. A Pew Research Study found, “Two thirds of the texters surveyed by the center’s Internet and American Life Project said they were more likely to use their cellphones to text friends than to call them. Fifty-four percent said they text their friends once a day, but only 33 percent said they talk to their friends face-to-face on a daily basis.” Social networking has expanded communication and networking but has also changed every-day socialization and privacy.[2]

  1. Hi Elvin,

It was great reading your post. Thank you for providing some statistics regarding social media's impact on real-life social skills. 15 years ago, the only way one could make friends was by meeting them in person, which automatically helped people develop their interpersonal skills. However, in the modern age with the rise of social media, shy people choose to limit interaction to online channels to avoid the awkwardness of meeting new people. Even though the awkward feeling disappears after a while, people choose to take the easy way out.

An interesting idea of new media is to create a social network specifically for gamers. The new media platform would have chats for gamers to connect, pages to post pictures or videos of their game content, and a comment and like section to respond to each post. There can even be a facetime-like feature on the social network so gamers can connect and play games together. One interesting feature that the social network can include are stories such as the ones on Snapchat and Instagram. This will create a new media for gamers that contains a good mix of features from Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. The gaming industry is growing more and more every year, especially professionally gaming. Gamers communicate a lot through their headset, but it would be great if there can be a platform to connect gamers when they are not actually playing video games. Gaming is an expansive industry in need of a new media to make communication easier and better.

Creativity and New Media

I play video games a lot so in my free time I created an em blem that would be displayed every time I play a game. I was able to use many tools available in Call of Duty. The game lets me use hundred of different building blocks and with some help from YouTube, I was able to create this emblem. Through the PS4 Share feature, I was able to screenshot the emblem on my console and email it to myself. I found it extremely interesting how new media gives us tools that can easily show how creative we truly are.

HW Creativity

New media fosters creativity by enabling people the accessibility to share and generate thoughts cheaper and easier. For example, a photographer previously would need to take a photo and display it in a gallery and must pay money to the gallery as well. Now, photographers can share the image on Instagram and millions of people can view the photo in a matter of seconds. Twitter allows people to easily have access to other thoughts. People can view others tweets and respond in their own creative way or lead people to have their own creative thoughts. “The Internet lets people exchange ideas easily and rapidly with large groups, and computing tools let people design new products cheaply.” Companies can even be more creative now through tracking social media activity and monitoring their feedback or responses. New media is making creativity more readily available for everyone. Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Followers by CLAIRE CAIN MILLER, the New York Times, October 26, 2009. Avai...
