How Social Media Companies Effect Our Communication and Habits

I have decided to focus my reesearch paper on how social media companies created products such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc have changed how people interact toward eachother. I believe that social media has made people feel satisfaction through likes, posts and messaging. It has created an illusion to make people feel happy for a few moments but sadder for extended periods of time. For example, if someone got 95 likes on one post instead of the 110 likes they got on another post, they think people do not like them as much or they look bad in the picture. But if this situation occurred inversely, people would think they look better or more people like them. In reality, most likely what happened is that more people saw your post which lead to more likes. People act differrently on social media than in person which is why words like "fake" are used more often. My generation is more depressed than previous generations whcih I believe social media has played a major role. Social media is the most widely used form of new media so it is critical we understand the behavioral changes that it has caused.

An interesting idea of new media is to create a social network specifically for gamers. The new media platform would have chats for gamers to connect, pages to post pictures or videos of their game content, and a comment and like section to respond to each post. There can even be a facetime-like feature on the social network so gamers can connect and play games together. One interesting feature that the social network can include are stories such as the ones on Snapchat and Instagram. This will create a new media for gamers that contains a good mix of features from Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. The gaming industry is growing more and more every year, especially professionally gaming. Gamers communicate a lot through their headset, but it would be great if there can be a platform to connect gamers when they are not actually playing video games. Gaming is an expansive industry in need of a new media to make communication easier and better.

Creativity and New Media

I play video games a lot so in my free time I created an em blem that would be displayed every time I play a game. I was able to use many tools available in Call of Duty. The game lets me use hundred of different building blocks and with some help from YouTube, I was able to create this emblem. Through the PS4 Share feature, I was able to screenshot the emblem on my console and email it to myself. I found it extremely interesting how new media gives us tools that can easily show how creative we truly are.

HW Creativity

New media fosters creativity by enabling people the accessibility to share and generate thoughts cheaper and easier. For example, a photographer previously would need to take a photo and display it in a gallery and must pay money to the gallery as well. Now, photographers can share the image on Instagram and millions of people can view the photo in a matter of seconds. Twitter allows people to easily have access to other thoughts. People can view others tweets and respond in their own creative way or lead people to have their own creative thoughts. “The Internet lets people exchange ideas easily and rapidly with large groups, and computing tools let people design new products cheaply.” Companies can even be more creative now through tracking social media activity and monitoring their feedback or responses. New media is making creativity more readily available for everyone. Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Followers by CLAIRE CAIN MILLER, the New York Times, October 26, 2009. Avai...
