How Social Media Has Changed Us By Elvin Nisman

An interesting idea of new media is to create a social network specifically for gamers. The new media platform would have chats for gamers to connect, pages to post pictures or videos of their game content, and a comment and like section to respond to each post. There can even be a facetime-like feature on the social network so gamers can connect and play games together. One interesting feature that the social network can include are stories such as the ones on Snapchat and Instagram. This will create a new media for gamers that contains a good mix of features from Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. The gaming industry is growing more and more every year, especially professionally gaming. Gamers communicate a lot through their headset, but it would be great if there can be a platform to connect gamers when they are not actually playing video games. Gaming is an expansive industry in need of a new media to make communication easier and better.

     I have contributing in the wiki for the class in two categories so far:   Third person shooter gaming and Accounting in social media. I have added pictures and content on both subjects. For the gaming section, I talked about Fortnite and its popularity. Fortnite grew to become one of the most popular games in the world due to its unique design but was eventually copied by competitors. Also, I discussed the importance of utilizing social media in the accounting profession. Accountant should use social media to expand their reach and their client base. I plan to contribute to two more sections and make edits where it is necessary. The wiki is a great place to share ideas and communicate and I plan to continue to contribute to it.

File sharing is the transfer of files from one computer over a network to another computer. File sharing is how most of the information gets shared today. P2P (peer to peer) file sharing consists of sharing files from one person to another through an application. BitTorrent is a great example of the transition to P2P file sharing. “BitTorrent, one of the most successful peer-to-peer programs ever. BitTorrent lets users quickly upload and download enormous amounts of data, files that are hundreds or thousands of times bigger than a single MP3.” BitTorrent was a pioneer on the enormous opportunity P2P file sharing has created. We can now share data/files that are huge in size which previously were unavailable to be shared. P2P sharing is an incredibly useful technology that everyone should utilize. Privacy and confidentiality became a major issue in the new age of media. Social media is growing every day and has become the largest media platform. Most social media accounts allow you to use their platform in exchange for your data. This has led to many political and economic issues. Facebook and Twitter were fined numerous times for data breaches and advertising issues. Also, these two companies were a major source of leaks in politics specifically, presidential elections. Many users have been hacked or had their public profile information used against them. Additionally, many users had credit cards and other payment information on file which has caused fraud and identity theft. As a result, many companies and users have made privacy a matter of urgency. Users are now more aware of the information they share, and companies have added many more layers of security as well as options the user can use to hide their data. I would advise Baruch to establish a larger social media presence in the new age of new media. Baruch has social media accounts, but they should try to significantly grow their following and audience. Baruch is not as well known outside of New York as many other universities. Social media is the largest growing platform for communication and would be a great tool to reach out to new audiences. Baruch can invest by hiring more marketing professionals as well as competing in international business competitions. This would significantly raise Baruch’s brand. Social media is the best way to expand your reach and baruch should take advantage of this growing opportunity.
